Are these dresses the 2020 answer to that Zara polka dot midi?
Ah, the heady days of last summer, when all we worried about was having a table in our favorite pub garden and whether or not we were going to wear the same Zara dress as everyone else. yes I am always talking about the Zara polka dot number because, frankly, I long for the days when we’re actually allowed to socialize in accidentally matching outfits. I’m also very interested in the deep question of what this year’s version of said dress might be. That is: which dresses are the most popular at the moment. And why?
It is such mysteries that I deign to solve for the good of the people. After all, it’s only getting warmer and we’re still stuck in some sort of post-containment re-emergence, so what else are we supposed to be wearing? Sure, leggings have brought us this far, but there are times when you might just want to welcome some degree of waft into your life.
& Other Stories gingham midi dress
This question of the hot dresses of 2020 (as nobody perhaps calls them) really arose during a Zoom meeting with colleagues. Kenya Hunt, Grazia’s fashion director sported a black and white plaid dress with an impressive sleeve, purchased from & Other Stories. There were oohs and aahs and enthusiasm so great the screen froze. But a few others mentioned that they bought the exact same dress. Comments have been made on how easy it is – it’s slightly oversized, a practical length, and ultimately really comfy without actually being a loungewear item. Well of course I couldn’t help but wonder: is this the Zara dress of 2020? Should he have his own Instagram account?
The answer might be no, just because it has some serious competition. Even at & Other Stories itself, may I add, as last month saw the launch of a new capsule collection including that pretty black dress, with a flattering high waist and voluminous sleeves. Naturally, since I wanted it so badly, it sold out quickly. This is my chance for containment. But don’t worry about my misfortune – & Other Stories has other similar styles which he says are very popular. What do they all have in common? Puff sleeves and flounce. It’s like music to my ears.
Mango’s pink button-down dress
Mango also launched its new collection, full of pretty summer dresses guaranteed to sell out quickly. The brand predicted that two, in particular, would fly off (virtual) shelves – this pink boutonniere (who actually To sold out but back in stock soon) and this mini scarlet. Both are made from cotton poplin and have nice sleeves. Can you already sense a theme among the general public?
The high street label Kitri has just released its summer collection, worn by ultimate cool girl Jessie Bush, and with it comes an abundance of living rooms perfect for feeling right at home, on picnics and on country walks. The flagship piece of the collection must be the Margot dress, in a picnic-perfect gingham and bulky sleeves – the pre-order waiting list for its June drop is already at 500 and should increase, so register now to avoid disappointment.
Besides the sleeves, it seems that the overall theme is sunny, bright, printed day dresses, which is really a happy sight during this time, the days of corona tracksuits. Browns quotes a peony cutout midi, this breathtaking dress by Rosie Assouline , Jmini aquemus shadow and Eyelet Embroidery from LoveShackFancy (almost sold out) like the styles he’s betting on this season.
At Matchesfashion, Fashion and Purchasing Director Natalie Kingham says Zimmermann continues to be one of the most popular brands, thanks in large part to its range of beautiful dresses, spectacular flowers sweeping the floor To chiffon styles with a vintage feel.

Zimmermann was also a bestseller for MyTheresa, with this Self Portrait lace-trimmed dress and this pancake number from Rotate Birger Christensen.
For Net-a-Porter, Sleeper Atlanta Gingham Dress is a current bestseller, proving that its success from last summer is not weakening this year. Other most popular dresses for the e-merchant include Rixo poppy print midi, Alexander McQueen’s ribbed knit dress and Valentino’s poplin shirt style.

And what about the OG of the viral dress, Zara? Well, while the long lines outside the recently reopened stores are anything to go by, the lockdown hasn’t dampened people’s fervent desire for the high street brand’s products. Undoubtedly, this bow detail dress was a huge success, selling out in a matter of days and popping up all over your Insta feed, without a doubt. While it’s back in stock soon – and you can sign up to receive notifications when it does – you can still make do with this ample and embroidered midi – Smart enough for virtual conference calls but light enough to be worn all day in hot weather.
Elsewhere on Main Street, Topshop says its floral kimono wrap dress is selling the fastest right now, while ASOS states that white dresses are the most popular among its customers.
With so much to choose from, it seems unlikely you’ll end up at Zoom wearing the same dress as your best friend. Then again, if that happens, at least you will only be a few feet away from your closet.
